Applications Open for ULI SF's Innovation Local Product Council!
Applications are now open for ULI San Francisco's Innovation LPC and due September 18, 2022!
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the recent passing of longtime ULI San Francisco leader, Dean Henry, CEO of Legacy Partners.
“Dean was always willing to help support me and others in so many ways that it’s hard to count. We’ve lost a key leader in our industry and in ULI. Most importantly, we’ve lost a good friend.”
Dean joined ULI in 1989. During his 33-year membership, Dean held numerous leadership roles within ULI and provided guidance both at the local and national levels of the organization. He served as the Sponsorship Committee co-chair and a board member for the ULI San Francisco District Council. Dean also participated as a ULI SF YLG mentor and speaker for various ULI SF programs, demonstrating his commitment to guiding the next generation of real estate professionals. In addition to his involvement with ULI at the local San Francisco District Council level, Dean also held numerous leadership positions with ULI at a national level. Dean served as a co-chair for Multi-Family Gold Flight Product Council, participated in the ULI Foundation of Governors as a Builder, and sat on the ULI Board of Trustees.
“In addition to the literal “Legacy” Dean left behind, he was one of the biggest supporters of ULI at the National and local level. I met Dean very early in my career and I thought he took me under his wing. I later learned that it was not unique to me… he did this for so many.”
“Dean Henry exemplified the best of ULI leadership. He was always glad to share a lesson learned, sometimes with a rueful laugh. He also shared his time and powers of persuasion to benefit ULI.”
Outside of his commitment to ULI, Dean devoted his time to the YMCA of San Francisco, National Association of Home Builders, Mercy Housing, Lambda Alpha International, and the Policy Advisory Board of the Center for Real Estate at the University of California. During his career with Legacy Partners, which began following his undergraduate education at University of Puget Sound in 1973, Dean had been directly responsible for the development of tens of thousands of multifamily units.
Dean will be remembered by ULI San Francisco and the real estate community as a leader, mentor, and dear friend. You can learn more about Dean’s life and legacy here. Below are the full tributes from fellow ULI leaders that knew Dean well:
“We recently lost a legend of the industry with Dean Henry’s passing. In addition to the literal “Legacy” he left behind, Dean was one of the biggest supporters of ULI at the National and local level. I met Dean very early in my career and I thought he took me under his wing. I later learned that it was not unique to me… he did this for so many. He always remembered my name and made sure to say hello at events, always willing to get on the phone or lend a hand or an advisory word. It was the little things that counted. There will never be another.”
“Dean Henry exemplified the best of ULI leadership. He was always glad to share a lesson learned, sometimes with a rueful laugh. He also shared his time and powers of persuasion to benefit ULI. ‘What can I do to help?’ he asked, when ULI SF needed a sponsorship co-chair to wrangle colleagues and friends for support. We will all miss Dean.”
“I was saddened by the news of Dean’s passing and would like to reflect on my relationship with Dean over the past 40 years. Like many of us, we met professionally and then became friends. I first met Dean when we shared information as competitors in the apartment development business in the 1980’s. He was always open with his information, was willing to provide insight in deals that he was doing, and we shared knowledge that I find not many competitors will do. This was my first insight into Dean’s character.”
“As members of ULI in the 1990’s we deepened our relationship and often would work together to help others in our business. I vividly remember when he recruited me to teach the ULI Multifamily Development Class. He had been instructing this class for several years and it was time to find his replacement. To say that I was unprepared to teach a class was an understatement, but I agreed to do it with the condition that he continue to stay involved and not only help me, but also to actively participate as one of my guest lecturers, which he did willingly anytime I asked him to join me. He was a great teacher and mentor to me during all those years.”
“When the San Francisco District Council asked Dean to organize a session, recruit new members, help with a program, or help raise money, he did so with great success. Anytime he was asked during a Multifamily Product Council meeting to be a speaker, panelist, moderator, or a table leader during a roundtable session, he always said yes and was one of the best!”
“Dean was always willing to help support me and others in so many ways that it’s hard to count. He was always fun to be with and will be sorely missed. We’ve lost a key leader in our industry and in the ULI. Most importantly, we’ve lost a good friend.”
