Get to know some of the ULI San Francisco members who work hard behind the scenes to develop the events and initiatives our District Council is known for. These industry leaders come from a variety of real estate land use sectors and lend their expertise and time to drive the work of our committees. We’ve asked these committee co-chairs to answer questions around their involvement with ULI San Francisco.
Chinar Starck, Women’s Leadership Initiative
Senior Vice President, Wells Fargo
Q: How did you first get involved with ULI and your committee?
I had been looking for ways to increase my involvement within the industry. Cynthia Lovell from Wells Fargo introduced me to ULI SF WLI’s former co-chair, Corie Edwards. After an introductory meeting, it was clear to me that getting involved with WLI would be a great choice.
Q: What is your favorite ULI memory or event?
I have a soft spot for the “Student Outreach/Internship” event, which was an idea that came out of a lunch with Gayle Starr. At lunch, we were brainstorming ways to increase the number of women in the industry. It has been rewarding to see this event expand to other districts.
Q: What keeps you engaged with ULI SF and what are you most excited about in the near future?
Interacting with high performing people within ULI SF has kept me motivated and energized. I was recently asked to join WLI’s Executive Committee. I am looking forward to connecting with other WLI leaders, sharing programming ideas and best practices and embracing national initiatives, especially around diversity and P4P.
Q: What’s your leadership philosophy/style?
As a leader, I think it is important to be a good listener. I am also a big believer in being available as a resource and guide to your team while still giving people the chance to have autonomy and challenge themselves.
Q: What’s front of mind for you right now?
COVID has disrupted all of our routines and increased the demands on our time. So, continuing to maintain structure and balance in both my personal and professional life has been front of mind for me.
Q: When travel goes back to normal, where is the first place you want to go to?
Pre-Covid, my husband and I were planning a trip to Paris and Bordeaux. That trip is still on calendar, only now we are going to kick it up a notch (or three)!
Q: Outside of work and ULI, what do you enjoy doing?
Spending time with my family and friends, playing board games with my kids, traveling and staying up to date on the latest in streaming entertainment. I am always looking for a good show recommendation to help recharge after everyone else has gone to bed!
