Building Community: Developers of Color Cohort
ULI has been a constant in an ever-changing world. Leading up to ULI SF’s 2024 Gala, themed Building Community, we asked fellow ULI SF members to share their experience in the organization and what they have learned along the way. We received responses from members with years of active engagement and from those with emerging experience already making a splash in our networks. We’re happy to highlight Edwina Jean-Louis, Melissa Jeng, and Jesse Tejeda from ULI SF’s Developers of Color Cohort.
Edwina Jean-Louis

Participating in the ULI Developers of Color Fellowship, especially as the only licensed architect with both architectural experience and a real estate development degree in the inaugural cohort, has been an incredibly enriching journey for me. As someone who deeply values knowledge, this fellowship has been a treasure trove of learning and growth. Graduating from UC Berkeley’s MREDD program during the pandemic deprived me of in-person interactions and classes, making this fellowship even more pivotal in allowing me to finally connect face-to-face with industry professionals.
Starting my own firm, EJL Atelier architecture + design, after a stint with an affordable housing developer has given me a unique perspective, and this fellowship has further expanded my understanding of the development field. I had the opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals across the industry, including experts from the SF Planning Department, and engaging panels where experienced developers discussed intricate details of funding sources and uses, and getting to listen to Majora Carter was inspiring. Meeting and collaborating with my fellow cohort members, who are all accomplished professionals in their own right, has been both inspiring and motivating. Together, we tackled challenges like responding to a mock NOFA for the SFMOHCD, with guidance and mentoring from MOHCD staff, which was a significant learning experience.
Attending the ULI Housing the Bay conference was a standout moment that broadened my perspective on critical industry issues and provided valuable networking opportunities. Moreover, the fellowship provided me with access to an industry professional as a mentor, whose guidance has been instrumental in navigating my career path. These interactions, experiences, and mentorship have not only propelled my professional growth but also reinforced the importance of community and support in navigating the complexities of the industry, especially during uncertain times. The relationships I’ve built and the knowledge I’ve gained have truly been game-changers for me, and I’m grateful for this transformative experience with ULI.
Melissa Jeng

Participating in ULI’s Developers of Color program helped me to maintain a sense of continuity during a period in my career when I was in between jobs. Developers of Color kept me engaged with the ULI community and, in combination with my participation at other ULI SF events, enabled me to learn from folks in other sectors and/or in different stages of their careers.
What I value most from my participation in this program is the cohort I’ve become close with and the bonds we’ve cultivated over the course of 9 months. The networking at each session was top-notch and I look forward to growing alongside each other, crossing paths in this cross-functional industry, as each member of our cohort advances in their respective careers. The 1-on-1 mentorship program that ULI facilitated also became a grounding and invaluable source of guidance and advice for me during an uncertain time
Jesse Tejeda

Participating in ULI’s Developers of Color Program, particularly as a real estate professional in the private sector, has helped me gain a deeper understanding of the affordable housing process in San Francisco as well as a required and deeper knowledge of the resources available to developers working with the City towards its goals to expand affordable housing production. The professional relationships, including the City contacts and access, are an invaluable benefit, particularly to developers that come from underrepresented groups in the real estate development sector.
I also value my participation as a volunteer in the ULI Programs Committee. It provides an opportunity to collaborate and develop relationships with other ULI members across various disciplines in the real estate industry. These professional relationships become an invaluable resource throughout one’s real estate career.
