ULI San Francisco: Market Street Reimagined Ferry Building Exhibit

When

2025-07-23 - 2025-08-13

From Wednesday, July 23rd to Wednesday, August 13th, the public can come and see the incredible submissions to the Market Street Reimagined Competition. This exhibit is located on the 2nd floor of the Ferry Building and is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8AM-6PM and on Saturday August 2nd from 8AM-4PM.

This exhibit showcases more than 150 bold and imaginative submissions to an open ideas competition focused on rethinking the future of San Francisco’s iconic Market Street. Entries poured in from nine countries around the world, submitted by design firms, community groups, nonprofits, artists, students, and individuals alike. The message is clear: the future of Market Street has captured imaginations far beyond the Bay Area.

Different than a design competition, an open ideas competition does not seek out a specific design solution that then gets built, instead it crowd-sources many ideas that can inspire new ways of thinking about community’s most vexing challenges.

The question at the heart of this challenge: How can we reinvent Market Street to respond to shifting work patterns, like remote work, and breathe new life into the corridor, making it vibrant during weekdays and weekends, day and night?

A distinguished jury of professional experts in real estate, economic redevelopment, transit, architecture, urban planning, landscape, sustainability and infrastructure recognized that while many San Francisco neighborhoods were thriving after the pandemic, Market Street was not - primarily because it needs to be reimagined as a different mix of uses that include more than just office space - housing, sports, entertainment, arts, performance, open space, retail, restaurants, bars, music and others. In other words, Market Street needs to become a fully functioning neighborhood, not just a place to work.

The award-winning submissions offer a toolkit of creative ideas to inspire that transformation. Look closely at each board, not just at the specific design elements, but at the essence of the concepts. It’s not about these particular trees, but the power of greening the street. Not only about an asymmetrical layout, but about maximizing solar access and creating a sense of place.

You can find new and exciting ideas in every single board.

We invite you to explore, reflect, and be inspired.
