While many Bay Area cities have seen their downtowns take major leaps forward in the past several cycles, Sunnyvale has struggled to push the envelope even as its Caltrain ridership reaches near Palo Alto and Mountain View levels. Most of the stagnation can be attributed to the failed mall redevelopment in the early 2000s. After a tumultuous history involving construction being paused for 10 years, bankruptcy, and the California Supreme Court – Downtown Sunnyvale is finally making progress again.

In the past three years, the CityLine partnership has restarted construction and completed the first 200 apartments as well as $25M of infrastructure. In addition, they are currently under construction of a Whole Foods Market and AMC Theaters. This is just the beginning, at completion CityLine will be over 1M square feet of office, over 1,000 apartments and over 300k square feet of retail.

This event and tour will offer perspectives from the City, the Developer and Design sides, both from when it started to falter there when it came back; insight into how the deal was struck to acquire the site in 2015; as well as presenting the vision for the future of the downtown district by the CityLine team.
