ULI San Francisco: The Housing Crisis: Local, Regional and State Perspectives
In this lively discussion, local, regional and state experts discuss authority for land use decisions and their impact on the California housing shortage. As communities grapple with the tension between local community desires and regional and statewide housing needs and mandates, local jurisdictions find themselves between a rock and a hard place, and elected city leaders find themselves torn between supporting their voters and meeting critical housing goals. Are some major development projects too big for a small- or medium-sized city? Should regional and state-wide goals override local control, especially in times of crisis?
Join us for a lively panel to discuss this question using local examples. Learn about the arguments for local, regional and state oversight, and what’s happening at each level to address the regional housing crisis.
This program is part of ULI San Francisco’s initiative, Housing the Bay. This panel was created in collaboration between two of our member-led working groups focusing on the “Cost of Building” and the “Public Process”.
